Potential Film Companies for my Horror Film

Production companies appear in the billing blocks on posters and at the end of trailers, as part of the titles, but also their idents appear at the beginning of trailers and as logos on the titles at the end and as logos on the film's poster (near the billing block).

I think that I am going to use three production companies across my marketing campaign, all of which will have made horror films previously. I think I am going to use one large Hollywood studio which belongs to one of the major multimedia conglomerates, alongside two specialist horror film production companies.

I am going to look at a few potential companies, before narrowing down my choices.

Twentieth Century Fox

Twentieth Century Fox, recently bought by Disney and re-branded as Twentieth Century Studios, is a large film production company with a long history of producing big budget movies. Whilst the company does not necessarily specialise in horror films it has nevertheless produced many films from the genre (though they are often the more commercial horror films), particularly in recent years. These include 'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter', 'Alien', 'The Fly', 'Poltergeist', 'Jennifer's Body', 'The Boogeyman' and 'Wrong Turn 3'.

Universal

Universal Pictures is another large Hollywood studio, owned by multimedia conglomerate Comcast, though unlike Twentieth Century Fox it has a track record of producing films from the horror genre. During the 1930s and the Studio Era Universal almost exclusively produced horror movies, including classics such as 'Dracula', Frankenstein', 'The Bride of Frankenstein' and 'The Invisible Man'. More recently, the company has been involved in producing the horror films such as 'The Turning', 'The Hunt', 'You Should Have Left', 'Freaky', 'The Forever Purge', 'Candyman', 'Halloween Kills', 'Black Phone', 'M3GAN', 'Mama' and 'Ouija'. I think I will pick Universal as the large film company that will produce and distribute my horror film, because of all the major studios it is the one most associated with producing horror movies.

Blumhouse Productions/Pictures

Blumhouse Productions specialises in producing horror movies, many of which have been produced in conjunction with Universal Pictures. These films include 'Paranormal Activity', 'Insidious', 'Sinister', 'The Purge', 'Oculus', 'Ouija', 'Creep', 'Get Out', 'Happy Death Day', 'Halloween', 'Black Christmas', 'The Hunt', 'You Should Have Left', 'Firestarter', 'M3GAN' and 'There's Something Wrong with the Children'. Because the company is at the forefront of producing modern horror films and because of their close working relationship with Universal, I think I am also going to use Blumhouse Productions as one of my production companies.

A24

A24 are another production company specialising in producing films from the horror genre, though these are often lower budget and more independent than some of the horror films produced in association with the larger studios, such as Universal, and the company produces a broader range of films from other genres than Blumhouse Productions or Ghosthouse Pictures. Horror films produced by A24 include 'Midsommar', 'Hereditary', 'It Comes at Night', 'The Witch', 'The Monster', 'Woodshock', 'Slice', 'Bodies, Bodies, Bodies' and 'Saint Maud'.

Dimension Films

Dimension Films ceased movie production in 2019, so I will not use them as one of my production companies. Prior to this, however, they were a company largely associated with making films from the horror genre including 'Polaroid', 'Children of the Corn: Runaway', 'Hellraiser: Judgment', 'Amityville: The Awakening', '47 Meters Down', 'Viral', 'Clown', 'All the Boys Love Mandy Lane', 'Scream 4', 'Piranha 3D' and 'Wolf Creek'.

Ghosthouse Pictures

Ghosthouse Pictures is another production company with a track record of making films from the horror genre. Some of their most notable horror films include 'Evil Dead', Evil Dead Rise', 'Don't Breathe', '30 Days of Night', 'Drag Me to Hell', 'The Unholy', 'The Grudge', 'The Children', 'Boogeyman' and 'The Messengers'. I think I will use Ghosthouse Pictures as my third production company.
